Sawgrass Lake Park - Saint Petersburg

When you first arrive at Sawgrass Lake Park, there is a picnic area along a narrow body of water backed by woods.  It is here that we saw several species of water birds. Herons and egrets waded in the shallow water looking for lunch.  Wood ibises probed the muddy bottom for prey.  Energetic common gallinules swam to and fro showing off their bright red beaks and handsome white and black feather patterns. The backdrop of trees was colorful this winter day as swamp maples show red from turning leaf to blossom when the seasons change. The scene was unbelievably beautiful and peaceful.

But......lurking on the far bank, not far down the path, was a huge alligator.  Of course, he was just lazing in the sun not bothering anyone or anything.

The boardwalk begins with a bridge across the water and enters a swampy, wooded habitat full of trees, vines, and ferns.  The dappled shade was pleasant as we made our way to the overlook tower on Sawgrass Lake itself.  The tower has two stories from which you can view the whole small lake. We observed turtles, fish, and more wading birds.

The boardwalk branches toward the highland hammock habitat.  Here the ground is dry, the path is sandy, and the vegetation different.  A good place for the armadillo we saw nosing through the leaf litter for food.

We enjoyed this park very much.  there is a pavilion with restrooms and a small wildlife display near the beginning of the trail. Bring your binoculars!
